Privacy policy

This policy explains, in line with Article 13 GDPR, which personal data is processed when you visit the-sift.net. This is a translation. The German version at /datenschutz.html is the legally binding one.

In short: no cookies, no tracking, no analytics tools, no advertising, no social media plugins, no external fonts or scripts. The site is static and serves all files from its own server. A cookie banner is therefore not required.

2. Hosting and server log files

This website consists of static files and runs on a server that I operate myself. When you access it, the web server stores technically necessary access data in log files. The following are recorded:

IP address of the requesting device
date and time of access
name and URL of the file requested
HTTP status and amount of data transferred
the previously visited page (referrer), where transmitted
browser type and operating system (user agent)

Purpose: delivering the site, operational security, error analysis and defence against attacks. Legal basis: Article 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in secure and stable operation).

Retention: log files are rotated daily and deleted automatically after 14 days. They are not combined with other data sources and are not evaluated for advertising purposes.

From these log files I additionally create an aggregated access statistic (visits and unique visitors per day, split into bots, probes and my own requests), which I evaluate on this server myself — no third party, no cookies, no counting JavaScript on your device. No IP addresses are stored for this: visitors are counted per day through a one-way hash built with a per-day key, and that key changes every day, so visits cannot be linked across days. These daily figures cannot be traced back to individuals and are kept beyond the 14 days of the log files.

In addition: where the server hardware is rented from a data centre operator, that operator processes the technically necessary connection data as a processor under Article 28 GDPR. No data is passed on for advertising or analytics purposes.

3. Contact by email

If you send me an email, I process your address, the content of the message and the transmission data in order to answer your enquiry. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in responding to enquiries), or Article 6(1)(b) GDPR for enquiries relating to preparing or performing an agreement. Messages are deleted once the enquiry has been dealt with and no statutory retention obligations apply. The mailbox is hosted on a mail server that I operate myself.

4. Cookies, consent and local storage

This site sets no cookies. No advertising, analytics or statistics cookies are set, and nothing is stored in your browser's local storage (localStorage, sessionStorage, IndexedDB). Page interactions — such as the reveal animations while scrolling — run purely in your device's memory and end when you close the page.

Since no information is accessed on, stored in or read from your device, consent under section 25(1) of the German Telecommunications Digital Services Data Protection Act (TDDDG) is not required; a consent banner would have no function.

5. Fonts, scripts and embedded content

The typefaces Silkscreen and Outfit are served from this server (self-hosted). Loading the page establishes no connection to Google Fonts or any other font CDN.
The small amount of JavaScript on this site does not load any external scripts; there are no analytics, advertising or tag manager files.
There are no maps, video, podcast or social media embeds and no tracking pixels.
There is no user account, comment form, newsletter or contact form on the site.

6. External links

This site links to external sources (for example minecraft.wiki, minecraft.net, news.xbox.com). When you click such a link, data is only transmitted to the respective provider once their page opens; their privacy policies apply. the-sift.net itself does not send any data to third parties, and I have no influence over processing by the linked sites.

7. Your rights

You have the following rights under the GDPR:

right of access to the data processed (Article 15 GDPR)
right to rectification of inaccurate data (Article 16 GDPR)
right to erasure (Article 17 GDPR)
right to restriction of processing (Article 18 GDPR)
right to data portability (Article 20 GDPR)
right to object to processing based on Article 6(1)(f) GDPR (Article 21 GDPR)

Since no personal data beyond the log files described above and your email is processed, access or erasure requests generally concern exactly that data. Please use the email address given above.

8. Right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority

Without prejudice to any other legal remedy, you have the right under Article 77 GDPR to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. The authority responsible for me is:

9. Data security

The site is delivered exclusively over encrypted HTTPS (TLS). The server software is kept up to date, and access to the server and log files is restricted. This site does not transmit your data to insecure third countries.

10. No automated decision-making

No automated decision-making, including profiling, within the meaning of Article 22 GDPR takes place.

11. Changes to this policy

If processing changes, I will update this policy and the date at the top. The version published on this page applies in each case.
